Sam Richmond Sailing Accident - Antigua Superyacht Challenge Leads To Death

Sam Richmond died on March 8 after being hurt in training before the 2022 Superyacht Challenge Antigua.

When the event occurred on Tuesday, Sam Richmond, from Hampshire in the United Kingdom, practiced ahead of the Superyacht Challenge, which ended yesterday in English Harbour.

According to a spokeswoman for search and rescue organization ABSAR, part of the rigging on the vessel he was onboard allegedly broke, smashing into him and suffering head injuries.

Another yacht’s crew, as well as ABSAR’s rescue boat, rushed to assist. Richmond was brought to the hospital before being flown to Florida for medical treatment, where he died on Thursday.

Richmond, a two-decade professional sailor, was scheduled to race on the 102-foot luxury yacht Farfalla.

Sailors competing in the Superyacht Challenge’s last day held a start line tribute parade in his honor.

A minute of silence was observed as crew members lined the dock in a show of respect.
